Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services; CC Premier Smith & Local MLA Office
Dear Minister Ellis, I am writing to voice my strong opposition to the Alberta government’s decision to move forward with the creation of a new independent police service. This decision has been made without any meaningful public consultation, and there has been no release of a comprehensive plan, financial details, or a feasibility study to justify such a significant shift in our province’s policing strategy. As an engaged citizen of Alberta, I am particularly troubled by: 1. Lack of Public Consultation: The government has already attempted to establish an Alberta Provincial Police Service, a move that faced substantial opposition from Albertans. Despite this, it appears that the government is proceeding with a similar plan, disregarding the clear preference of the people to maintain our existing police services. In a democratic society, such a significant decision should not be made without consulting the very people who will be most affected by it. 2. Economic Concerns: In these challenging economic times, affordability is a top priority for many Albertans. The creation of a new police service, which duplicates existing efforts, is likely to incur substantial additional costs for taxpayers. With many of us already struggling financially, this is an expense that should not be a priority. The money would be better spent on bolstering and improving the resources of our current police services, which are already established, trusted, and integrated within our communities. 3. Lack of Transparency: The absence of a clear plan or financial details raises significant concerns. How will this new police service be funded? What will be the impact on existing police agencies in Alberta, particularly in terms of recruitment and retention? Will this new service create unnecessary competition for existing police services, thereby weakening overall public safety? 4. Coordination with Existing Services: There are serious concerns about how the new police service will function alongside pre-existing services. Creating a parallel system could lead to confusion, inefficiency, and diminished public safety, rather than the improvements the government claims it will deliver. Given these concerns, I urge the government to halt the creation of this new independent police service. Instead, I ask that you focus on strengthening and investing in the current policing services that are already trusted by Albertans. Any changes to our policing system should be made transparently, with public consultation, and only when there is clear evidence that they will improve public safety without imposing unnecessary financial burdens on taxpayers. Please listen to the voices of Albertans and ensure that any decisions made are in the best interest of our communities. Sincerely,
